Hello,
I have a developers machine (W2K workstation) that has sql server 7.0 with a local instance. He requested that I upgrade him to sql server 2000.
I ran the sql server 2000 enterprise install which installed sql server 2000 client tools only - did not upgrade the existing local 7.0 instance. My problem now is that I still need to upgrade the local instance. There is no longer a Service Manager for the local 7.0 instance, however I can connect to it with the new 2000 client tools from his desktop.
Does anyone know which version of sql server I should install now (that will upgrade the local 7.0 instance) and where I can find it?

I am not sure how well it updates version 7, but for Win 2K you need to install the Personal edition of SQL server 2k. You should have it as a separate CD supplied with the SQL Server Enterprise edition CD.
The Enterprise edition only installs on Windows 2k Server or Windows 2k Advanced server.
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q257716 for information about versions and http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q261334 for information about the upgrade.

Correct. In the SQL 2000 case, there are 2 CDs. One is the version you purchased and the other is Personal, which is free for all CAL authorized users you have. Run this for the upgrade.
There was a bug on the CD for Standard which caused the upgrade to fail. MS had a bug on the CD, which casued the upgrade to fail. They had a new .ISS file for it. Can't seem to find the KB article now.
