Member formatting

  • Hi.  I am working on re-creating an existing Essbase application as an exercise and am not terribly familiar with Analysis Services.  I don't be able to do the equivalent of member formatting.  I like to create groupings of employees or customers to facilitate navigating the hierarchy (Employee-A, Employee-B, etc).  I could always add a column to the star schema or use a view.  Is there a more elegant way to create these grouping level members?

  • We normally add the levels (grouping members) to the view that feeds the dimension.

When using Yukon you will be able to add these type of calculated fields to the model (like Cognos and Essbase do now) rather than having to add them in the source.

  • Thanks for the reply.  Is it common practice to use a view to feed the dimensions?  I frequently did the same when using Essbase Integration Services because it was easier than getting the star schema changed.

  • It's common practice for me

I do it for the same reason you gave, plus if I need to put a where clause to filter something out (or in), although you can do this in AS, I prefer to do it in a view than in the dimension.
