Tempdb size

  • Hi,

is there an way, where i can calculate a useful size of the tempdb, when i restrict the tempdb size?

Or an other question - Could it happen that the sql-server bedomes a problem with a too small size of the tempdb, when the size is restricted (for example 3 GB)?

Thanks in advance for your help and kind regards from Austria

  • Since tempdb is used for scratch space for worktables, ordering, groups, etc. it's size really depends on the queries and loads that you throw at it. There's no good tool to size it and you need to see what's appropriate for your system by tracking the size and then setting a minimum size.

If you restrict it's growth, then you can cause problems for applications that run out of temp space needed. The server will continue to run, but queries will fail.

  • Thank you for your answer
