Mail Profile option greyed out

  • I have a server with SQL Server 2000 sp3 on it, and when I go into SQL Agent properties and look at the mail session area it is greyed out so that I can't select a mail profile. Can someone tell me why that would be and how to fix it. I have verified that I have system admistrator priveleges within SQL Server. I am stumped. Thanks.

  • Is SQL Agent configured as a DOMAIN account or localsystem?  I would change SQL Agent to be DOMAIN account ...

  • I do hope you installed a mail client compatible with SQL Server and created a mail profile?

  • Thanks for the responses. It turns out the mail profile wasn't installed under the domain service account for SQL Server.

    Cheers.

  • I'm experiencing the same issue that threegs39 was.  However, I have setup the MS Outlook profile with a domain account and ensured that both the SQL Server and SQLAgent services are running under the same domain account that Outlook is using, but the option is still greyed out.  Any ideas?

  • Same problem Here!

Both SA ans SQLSRVR are using the same domain user account (Domain admin by the way) created specifically for this purpose (send SQL notifications by e-mail, otherwise I would have kept SYSTEM logon) , I can change the profile in SQL Mail and the root of the server properites but not on SQL Agent...

    Help would be very appreciated.

  • According to Microsoft once changes to mail profile are made, server needs to be rebooted for the Mail Profile option to become enabled. Here is the excerpt from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315886/EN-US/:

For any of the preceding changes to take effect, you must stop, and then restart the SQL Server service. If you reconfigure the default mail profile, you must restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

    It worked for me.

    Good luck.

    Marina.

  • If you just stop and restart the SQL services once the profile has been created, SQL will usually recognize the profile and you're all set.  Rarely you might have to reboot the machine.

  • Same problem here, and both SQL Server and SQL Agent are running under the same account (domain administrator).  Outlook was set up using while logged in as administrtor, as well.  SQL Agent looks like it is running... backups are running, etc.  Have stopped/started many times, and re-booted more than once.  SQL Mail picks up the profile right away... but can't get SQL Agent Mail to.

Maybe this is related?  I started out trying to use Outlook Express, and at that time, SQL Agent Mail DID recognize the profile created in Outlook Express... but SQL Mail did not.  After I learned that Outlook Express would not (should not?) work with SQL, then I deleted the Outlook Express account, and created one in Outlook.  That works in SQL Mail, but not SQL Agent Mail.

So, I've now got SQL Agent Mail configured with an Outlook Express profile, and SQL Mail configured with an Outlook profile.  Does that sound logical?  Is that the way it SHOULD work?

  • Allow me to add to that post I just submitted... SQL Agent Mail LOOKS like it took the Outlook Express profile, but I can't send a test message with it... So I'm still stumped.  Why can't I get SQL Agent Mail to recognize that Outlook profile?  (Yes, they are both definitely running under the same account.)

  • Yek! SQL Server and Agent running under the Domain Administrator account?

Are you sure you really want this?

  • It's a very small shop, and I'm one of those that tries to get it working with all permissions, no security, etc... then we'll tighten it up.  (Case in point... if I was using other accounts, that would just be another variable in the mix.)
