Can I Create And/or Modify SSIS Packages Using SQL Server Management Studio

  • I know the interface for SSIS Packages is SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio.

What I am asking is this.  Is there a way for me to create one by using SQL Server Management Studio?  I really don't care if it launches Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, but I want to be able to initiate the creation from the management studio like I can do in Enterprise Manager for SQL Server 2000.  There all I have to do is go to Data Transformation Services and right click local packages and select new packages.  Is there anything like that in the management studio?

I have managed to save some SSIS packages in the MSDB and File System in the integration services that can be viewed in SQL Server Management Studio.  However, I am not able to open them to view them or modify them.  In SQL Server 2000 all I had to do was double click the package to open it and change it if I wanted to.  Can something like this be done with the packages I can see using SQL Server Management Studio?

  • The only packages that you can do that with as far as I know are maintenance plans and then you are limited to just a few tasks.

  • Thank you!

I had to take a double take when I noticed your signature and it was for the book that I am currently reading and then found your name on the book.

And then I noticed the other link was for a blog here at SQLServerCentral.  I am going to check out your blog and see if I can get one.

    Thanks again for your reply!

  • Now I'm embarased to say I haven't actually bought it yet, a coworker of mine did and I am reading hers right now.

But I do have the previous one signed by Brian Knight and have had the SSIS book on my list to buy for a while, perhaps I'll get it for Christmas.

I've just started the past week or two learning SSIS as fast as I can and am running into so much stuff that has changed that it is frustrating.  So that is why I posted here and have been reading as I know the SSIS book will provide a lot of info I need and will be easier than hunting in SQL Server Tutorial or on line for what I need to learn and in the order I want to learn it.

  • No worries, thank your co-worker for me.

SSIS is hard to learn, but once you get the hang of it, it's not bad.  I hope the book will give people the basics and help them understand what is possible. Then, they'll have to take it from there.

  • For an unsolicited comment...

I DO have your book (purchased), and I have to say that it is one of the best books I have ever gotten to get you up to speed fast.

It briefly touches on every module and gives simple examples. There is not much depth, but it steers you in the right direction so you can figure it out for your self. I find that I constantly refer back to this book. Because if it, I have been able to develop some fairly complex SSIS programs.

I HIGHLY recomend this book to anybody who is trying to figure out what that SSIS thingy is.

Thank you Aunt Kathi and the rest of the authors.

    Shalom!,

  • Thanks for the kind words.

One thing that is disappointing is that some people will put bad reviews on Amazon because the book didn't explain the exact problem they were trying to solve.  I guess the book could have taken years to write and be thousands of pages and still not have the solution to every possible problem.
