Here is the scenario.
We have a team of users who currently use SQL Server Mangement Studio to connect to our hosting centre to run reports on various SQL databases. We have appropriate licencing at the hosting centre to allow this.
The same users now need access to some SQL servers at different locations (MSDE 2000 licenced). Can they use the Management Studio they currently use to connect to those databases as they are or is additional licencing required (ie CALs to the 2000 servers) ?

Since it is MSDE I don't believe you need any CAL's to connect to the SQL Server.

Wouldn't connecting via Management Studio give you more functionality though ?
What if you were connecting to a SQL 2000 server - with a standard licence ?
Thats for the info.

What do you mean by more functionality? The DBEngine isn't going to do more because you are using the full-blown management tools. If that happened, then there would have to be a version of Management Studio for each version of SQL Server (Workgroup, Standard, Enterprise) as there is different functionality available in each version.

I think, as long as the Client Workstation is licensed for SSMS, and the Server is licensed for the database engine, you are covered.
Although bear in mind that remote connections to MSDBs aren't generally enabled.
