Upgradating sql server 2000 to sql server 2005

    Hi guys,

    Previously i installed sql server 2000 standard edition. I have two user databases. Now i installed Sql Server 2005 Enterprise edition.When i open sql server 2005 from start-->Program--> Microsoft SQL Server 2005-->Sql Server Management Studio.(or sqlwb), It is showing database, what are databases are there in sql server standard edition. It is also showing version number also.Here i am attaching screen shot of starting page of sql server 2005.

    Is there any alternate solution to get sql server 2005(9.0).

    2)Please suggest me how to upgrade 2000 to 2005.

    Hi

    First check what are the available instances on your machine and their respective status.

    Most easier way to find it out would be

    Start -> Programs -> MS SQL Server 2005 -> Configuration Tools -> SQL Server Configuration Manager

    In SQL Server Configuration Manager window, click on SQL Server Services. On the right hand side you will see the available instances and their status. Just confirm which is your 2005 instance and then try connecting to that instance.

    Hi

    It looks like you have installed only client components of SQL 2005 and not SQL server database engine. What is your OS?

    Also go to services and check if you have any service like "SQL Server".

    Also go to your installation path and check if SQL server is installed. For eg:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\[highlight=#ffff11]MSSQL.4[/highlight]\MSSQL\Binn\sqlservr.exe

    Path may not be same on your machine.

    If you are installing on Win XP machine, SQL Server 2005, Enterprise Edition won't work. You have to go for Dev Edition.

    Also please note that in sql server 2k5 management studio can register both sql 2k and sql 2k5 servers. So dont get confused.

    upgrading is not affected by service pack, they are installed after sql 2005 installation has taken place. On the other hand certain versions of sql server can only be upgraded by equivalent versions of the later product is this what you mean?

    In my system, I installed Sql Server 2000 standard edition. Now i am trying to install sql server 2005 developer edition. which is pirated one. Is it will support upgradation from sqlserver 2000 to sql server 2005.If yes, is there any tool will be installed by default when installing sql server 20005 developer edition.?

    Vijay,

    There is MS tool available called "MS SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Advisor". You can find it at

    There is one more white paper for upgradation

    But in your case its not required. Just check if you can find 'ReadmeSQL2005.htm' file in your setup CD. There u'll find steps to upgrade.

    Else go with the installation. Start New Installation, do all validity checks. In components to install, Select SQL Server database services. Then in the instance name page, view and select from installed instances. And proceed with the installation.

    Hi all,

    In my system, I installed sql server 2000 standard edition. Now i installed sql server 2005 developer edition.When i am trying to connect to Sql server, I am getting the following error.What is the solution?

    "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)"

    Vijay,

    Make sure your SQL Server 2005 is running. If you are trying from the local machine, then your SQL server is not running.

    Goto services and start the SQL Service.

    We do not condone piracy at all. Microsoft visits these forums, and you are asking for legal troubles by using pirated software.

    Upgradation and upgradating are not words. It's just "upgrading".
