Problem installing sql server 2005 EE on Windows Vista home Basic SP2.

  • Hi,

I am trying to install sql server 2005 EE on Windows Vista home Basic SP2.

After running the setup, the System Configuration Check succeeds with

three warnings mentioned at the end of this post.

After providing the license key, in the Components to Install dialog

box, only the last component is enabled.

i.e. Workstation components, books online and development tools.

All the others, including database services are disabled.

I want to install SQL Server 2005 instance and start creating

databases. Please help me in installing sql server 2005 for doing

    this.

and after installed IIS also i t show same warning !!.

  • You cannot install the Enterprise Edition on client OS like Vista.

Only on a server OS like Windows 2003 or 2008.

If it's just for a test or development work you can install the developer edition on Vista. The Dev Edition contains all the features of the Enterprise Edition.

For 2008 the same applies as for 2005, you cannot install EE on a client OS. For more info see here:

  • If you want to have a playground environment, then subscribing to TechNet or MSDN is a good idea.

I have subscribed to TechNet for maybe 4 years, and it give me access to near enough all Microsoft OS, server and Office software. This means I SQL EE on Windows EE on my box at home, and get to learn how some of the advanced features work. Renewal cosst about GBP 200 but the first year costs a bit more. Similar prices apply for other currencies.

MSDN provides various subscription levels that can include all of what is in TechNet plus the development software such as Visual Studio but I think this costs more.
