Default Instance

  • Can we have Default instance of SQLServer 2008 and SQL Server 2005 on same box?I have an sql server 2008 as default instance and i need to install sql server 2005 default instance on same box so is there any way like i can stop the services(2008) and install 2005 as default instance with out uninstalling sql server 2008 ?

    Thanks in advance 🙂

  • For a default instance, there can be only one. all other additional instances would have to be named instances.

if your current default is 2008, and you HAVE to have a 2005 default instance you'll have to uninstall 2008.

why can't you use a named instance for your 2005?

  • I agree with Lowell. Having two different SQL servers on the same computer are pretty much why named instances exist in the first place, so why can't you use them?
