SQL2K - connection failed?

    Hi,

    I have a windows2K server installation and I installed SQl2K. I went to enterprise manager to create a new database. But as soon as I click the server icon on left..it says connection failed and asking to check SQL registration. I used the windows authentication in the registration page. Is there are anything else I need to do?

    When you installed SQL Server, what type of authentication did you set it for (Windows Only or Mixed Mode)?

    Did you register your server in Enterprise Manager? That's not the same as registering software, in this case it means connecting Enterprise Manager to your SQL Server.

    I used Windows only authentication mode.

    Yes, I did register the SQL server in Enterprise Manger. It registers successfully but as soon as I click the server icon it says connection failed and check the registration properties.

    Is the server local or remote and if remote is that machine on a different domain than you?

    HI..

    Yes, it a local installation and SQL server is running.

    But when I go to the Enterprise Manager and click

    the server icon, it says connection failed and check

    the SQL registration properties.

    Can you connect via ISQL (Query Analyser)?

    Right click on the server and review the Server Regitration Properties to make sure it is doing as expected.

    I am sure that you have already checked this too but,

    Is the SQL Server in the same domain as your PC?  If not are the domains trusted to each other?

    Can you log in to the SQL Server and connect from there?

    Have you tried pinging the SQL Server to ensure that you can get to the server from where you are?

    Have you added your Windows login to the SQL Server to allow you to connect?  This is assuming that the login you used to set-up SQL is different than yours.

    Is your Client Network Utility configured properly i.e. not using named pipes in a LAN and not using TCP/IP over a WAN?
