Hi all,
can you install .NET Framework 3.5 on a SQL 2005 machine? I had a feeling this build of .NET was for 2008.

Yes you can install 3.5 on a SQL 2005 machine. For 2008 it is required to have at .NET3.5.1, for SQL 2005 it's not required, but it also does no harm.

There are no issues in having .Net 3.5 SP1 installed on a machine running SQL Server 2005.
However, a number of people have found that installing .Net 3.5 SP1 on a server that have had many patches appiled over months or years does not always work. Google can find a lot of stories about these problems, and most people who hit this issue end up re-installing Windows before they can get a working .Net 3.5 SP1 install.
If you are building a new server to host SQL 2005, then put .Net 3.5 SP1 on the machine before you install SQL, and everything should be fine.
If you have a server that has been running SQL 2005 for some months and has had Windows and SQL patches applied, IMHO you should not install .Net 3.5 SP1 on such a server. If you do, you should expect maybe 30% of installs to fail, and you should have a plan for what to do in this situation.
