Backup to network drive failing.

  • I am backing up databases to a network directory, but recently my backups have sporadically started failing. The error that I am getting says"Can't open dump device '\\T01a2f1\csdba\mssql\T01CISRH1\msdbLogBackup.DAT', device error or device off line. Please consult the SQL Server error log for more details. (Message 3201).

If I run the same backup sometimes later manually it will succeed.

    Can anybody help.

  • That error is usually associated with an invalid or an inaccessible path. Is it possible that some other backup application has the drive space access limited during these times? Just a shot in the dark.

  • Thanks for your response. We are looking at this aspect also. This could very well be the reason. At this point we are looking at problem with the network directory where we are trying to backup. This problem started occuring recently we were backing up the with the same schedule for some time.

  • This is almost always the share being inaccessable (networking problem) or rights (security problem).
