Development Tools

  • Hi,

I'm looking for an SQL Server development tool (to replace / extend the features found in Enterprise Manager and Query Analyser). The most important feature for me is some form of version control integration. I'm using Sourcegear's "The Vault" version control system.

I'm also hoping for some features to help me roll out schema updates accross multiple servers.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks,

    - Chris

  • you should look at DB Ghost (http://www.dbghost.com) for source code verification using your source control, build, comparison and deployment/synchronization and Apex do a IDE that can connect to your source control although I don't know whether they do "The Vault". Personally I still use Query Analyzer as I find the steps to have the source code under control are simple.

  • You should also take a look at

    ApexSQL Edit from ApexSQL http://www.apexsql.com/apex_sql_edit.htm

    SQL IDE from Imceda http://www.imceda.com/SQL_IDE_Description.htm

SQL Source Control 2003 from Skilled Software http://www.skilledsoftware.com/sqlsourcecontrol.htm

And if you've got a healthy budget and need cross paltform development, try Rapid SQL from embarcadero http://www.embarcadero.com/products/rapidsql/rsdatasheet.html

Each of theses products will give you a developement environment with source code control in a single IDE.

Although he doesn't mention it, Mark Baekdal is one of the main developers for DBGhost, so I'm not suprised he recommends his product to the detriment of others.

Most importantly, test out the field and choose a product that works in your environment the way you want it to.
