SQL 2005 migration on the same server as 2000

  • HI

I am tearing my hair out. I am trying to do a sql 2005 migration from 2000 on the same server(DB03).I have just run through the installation on an evaluation CD of 2005.I chose to install it to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\ directory and chose to create a new instance DEV_TEMP on the SQL 2005 database.

Some things installed but a lot of things didnt. It told me to read the log files to find out more but they are all greek to me. Is there something fundamentally wrong with what I have done? What is the best way to do a migration on the same server?

  • Chris,

before you install SQL 2005, you shuld define which parts of 2005 you will need. I did some large migrations and most of the time we choose only to install the DB engine and the client tools. Occasionally we added Integration services. For Analysis Services and Reporting Services (if needed) I usally advice to have a seperate installation on a different server.

You say some things did not install, but without knowing which parts it's hard to tell if you need them or not. Generally speaking installing a new instance sounds the right way to me if you have to install it on the same server.

Maybe you can give us more details what you're missing.

  • Thanks Markus

I will uninstall and try a simpler install as you mentioned and will let you know how I get on

  • Thanks Guys got it installed eventually

I had to uninstall SQL Native CLient from addd/remove and then the install ran smoothly.

Lesson learnt -- dont try install everything at once!
