how do you launch tutorials?

  • I inherited a computer from a co-worker who left. On it she installed SQL Server 2005. The help system is chock full of references to the various and sundry tutorials that come with the product, but I can't find so much as a syllable about how one actually accesses those tutorials.

When I select Start, Programs, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Documentation and Tutorials, Tutorials, SQL Server Tutorials, it simply launches one of the help screens. That screen, and the ones it contains links to, describe the tutorials topics in great detail, but nowhere is there any explanation of how you actually launch the tutorials.

    What am missing here?

  • Alan,

in BOL search for tutorials. There it explains step for step what to do.

  • That seems to be true for some of the top-level topics (e.g., Analysis Services and Data Mining), but NOT for the first (and presumably most fundamental) one, SQL Server Tools.  If you drill down through the links all it gives you are lists of what you will supposedly learn, but no actual instructions or exercises and no further links.

This seems so typical of Microsoft.  Ever since they made the ill-advised switch to HTML based help systems, it gets harder and harder to find answers to the most basic questions.

  • Alan,

on the page there they tell you what you will learn, there is a link at the bottom of the page under "Next Task In Lesson". This will start the actual tutorial.
