Default Vs Named Instance on Production

    Hello DBA folks,

    I am wondering what are the advantages/differences between a default and named instance. How would you support to choose one from either default or named instance on production server if your manager is asked you to install only one instance on production and explanation to choose why your choice is good for production. I had similar situation and I greatly appreciate any help.

    Some applications do not supporn named instances. Also named instances require port 1434 open unless you configure clients to uncheck "Dynamically Determine Port" and most network administrators don't like opening UDP 1434 because of Slammer W.
