Migrating from SQL Server 2000 to SQl Server 2005

  • hello,

we are planning to migarte from Migrating from SQL Server 2000 to SQl Server 2005.

I learned that we can use Copy Database wizard or attach/detach db or backup/restore for non system databases.

But how can we move Systems databases ( Master, model,MSDB) from Sql 2000 to 2005 server along with login informations?

please advise. Also Please let me know if any other precautions to take apart from keeping the full back up copies of 2000 database. ( we are not overwriting the existing 2000 server, but we are moving to dedicated server for 2005)

  • The short answer is "you don't".  But, the CDW does have functionality that builds an SSIS package to migrate Jobs/Logins from 2000 to 2005.  This may also be done manually.  There is not automated process to migrate objects that may be in "master" or other system dbs.

    Hope this helps!
