Does anyone know the source of these messages

  • We have a new Wind 2k03,  sql 2005 server, with two databases on it. No sql backup jobs have been created but the server eventlog (Applicaiton) log has repeated instances, throughout the day, of this:

Database backed up. Database: MyDB, creation date(time): 2007/03/14(21:25:02), pages dumped: 164, first LSN: 20:477:37, last LSN: 20:493:1, number of dump devices: 1, device information: (FILE=1, TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE: {'myDB_00__84f85217_71c9_4336_8c85_4412b95a0648_'}). This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

    ..

The database 'model4IDR' is marked RESTORING and is in a state that does not allow recovery to be run.

    ....

    From the System Event log:

The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the running state.

    ....

The Volume Shadow Copy service was successfully sent a start control.

    ....

The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the running state.

    ...

The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the stopped state.

    ...

The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the running state.

All this within the span of 5 minutes. And this pattern repeats throughout the entire day. The "Shadow copies" option for this server is disabled.

    Any help, much appreciated.

  • I believe it is third party backup or HW based backup because TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE information writes when third party backups ...

  • Are you using WININTERNALS? It writes event log entries that state that exact message.  If possible, disable WININTERNALS and you'll see the entries disappear.  I have our server admin looking into seeing if there is a patch for this.

  • I have the same problem. I'm not sure but I think it might be related to the Backup Exec job that runs at the same time as the event appears in my application log.

    Hope this helps
