Remote Access to SQL Express 2005

  • Hello,

I have tried all of the suggestions in this forum, MSFT KBs and other forums without success.

I have installed SQLX on a WinXP SP2 machine (BACKOFFICE) and am able to create the SQL Native Client connection so that I can get the Access app to work. No problem.

I then tried to get one of the other computers (SALES) on the WorkGroup LAN to connect using ODBC to no avail. I set up the SQLX server to allow remote access, set the protocols to TCP enabled, etc. Added sqlserver.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to the exceptions on the firewall of BACKOFFICE.

This morning I set up my laptop with VPN into their network to connect to SQLX and it works just fine. I had just recently installed VBX and it installed the SQL Native Client. I used SNC to connect to the SQLX server and it worked perfectly.

I then remote desktop connected to SALES and installed the sqlncl. I then setup a new ODBC connection using the SQL Native Client option and received the error that the server was actively denying access.

Why does the local area network get denied access, but the VPN connection comes sailing right through? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Update:

For the heck of it, I tried a third machine (Calibration) on the Workgroup LAN. I installed the SQL Native Client, connected to the SQLX server/database with success. So the key is using SQL Native Client for your ODBC connections with SQLX.

I will have to go back to the SALES machine and clean that up to see why it isn't connecting.

    Thanks - this is closed.
