HP StorageWorks DButil as part of a strategy of replicating SQL databases

  • We have recently started evaluating the HP StorageWorks DButil utility as part of a strategy of replicating our production databases to a reporting environment, so our users can issue ad-hoc queries in that environment instead of production.

The tool works to take a snapshot of the source database before replicating the database files across to the target LUN. This process takes from a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on database size. During that interval, write operations are suspended and are resumed when the snapshot is completed.

Has anyone had experience with this tool?

Any issues with it that I should be aware of?

  • Hi we did a test using HP StorageWorks DButil and EMC technology as well, they works fine in small database with low transaction processing, but when the databases were big and important transaction running the servers had a delay and in sometime timeout were raised.

You should evaluate your environment about the size and the transaction rate.
