Best SQL Server performance MOnitoring tool.

  • Hello all,

I am a new SQL DBA with 6 months of experience. My team has given me the responsibility to find the appropriate database performance tool to monitor our databases. i tried to check online but there are a lot of tools available and promises to be the best..... I am confused and not sure which one to go for...

We have some 40 servers along with 500+ databases running ....... The data is being pumped in continuously and we are having severe backup issues along with degraded performance ..

Can someone suggest me a tool which i can look into which will serve the purpose?

    Thanks

  • There are plenty of third-party tools available, most of which have a download for you to trial in your environment. For example, look at the Quest, Redgate and Idera websites. However it sounds like you have a few problems and will need multiple tools such as a backup compression tool and monitoring tools. The monitoring tools are real-time and show what the server/database is doing. Other tools provide more historical views so you can see how performance has changed over a period of time and why. Also the monitoring tools only flag up issues, you will still need to work out what to do when the screen turns red with alerts.

  • Thanks for the suggestion sir.

  • I highly recommend Idera Diagnostic Manager. I have used many of the tools out there (Spotlight, SCOM, etc.) and Idera's is the best out there. Besides it being great at diagnosing issues, its alerting functionality is far superior to everything else out there. As a DBA, you need to know if there is a problem at 3am and Idera will do that, without sending you an email/text message every 5 minutes. Although SCOM and others can do this, Idera gives you better control and functionality. A great product.

  • Thanks Dave... I am yet to finalize on Either Idera or SQl sentry:-)

    Thanks for the Information though!!!!
