RAID-50

  • Has anyone had any experience with RAID 50. We are potentially implementing a new SAN in which RAID-50 will be the default, which is only marginally more expensive than other forms of RAID on this SAN.

Has anyone had any experience with RAID 50 and it’s performance with regards to data, system, and log drives ?

  • Personally I haven't had experience with RAID 50 SANs but lets check what others has to say here.

But out of curiosity, any specific reason of using 50? I believe, you may loss over performance.

RAID 50 improves upon the performance of RAID 5 particularly during writes, and provides better fault tolerance than a single RAID level does. This level is recommended for applications that require high fault tolerance, capacity and random positioning performance.

Nice if you can afford it, I thought it was quite costly to implement.

Only thing I would ask, is are you thinking of using virtual machines in relation with this san.
