sql cluster install windows cluster offline

  • I was trying to install a named SQL CLuster 2008 R2 instance on Windows 2008 R2 cluster. I found warnings while trying to install.

    Rule Check Result

    ---------------------------

Rule "Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS) cluster verification warnings" generated a warning.

The MSCS cluster has been validated but there are warnings in the MSCS cluster validation report, or some tests were skipped while running the validatation. To continue, run validation from the Windows Cluster Administration tool to ensure that the MSCS cluster validation has been run and that the MSCS cluster validation report does not contain errors.

    ---------------------------

    OK

    ---------------------------

I found that the Windows Cluster group is offline, and the IP address is showing as failed because its already in use.

The existing SQL clustered instance is running fine.

I was not sure if I can go ahead with the new SQL instance install, or get the windows cluster issue fixed first. I was trying to be safe and ask for it to be fixed.

Is it advisable to install SQL instance without having it fixed?

  • I just did several Windows Cluster installs and I would say you should run the Windows Cluster Administration validation tool before continuing. If you find any errors get those fixed first. If you continue you will likely have problems

  • thank you fhanlon,

this is the second named instance. I had run the validation report last time and everything was fine. But like you said, it is always best to run before each install even if it is a named instance on same cluster..

To note, this is a warning and I assume it still has to be fixed.

  • There may be some warning that can be ignored. It depends. For example it may warn you DTS is not installed. If you aren't intending to install management tools and the app does not require this then it may be ok to ignore this. But you would still need to check this out first. I got some warnings about not having a backup NIC card and this was deemed acceptable by our network guys. The cluster is up and fails over as expected so in our case this was fine. We may add NIC cards later.

Somebody stole your MS Clusters's virtual IP address.

Go get it back and smack them in the hand.:exclamation:
