Not all Linked Server Providers are listed in SSMS - 2008

  • Good Day Wishes to all....

I have Windows 2008 - X64 Server with SQL Server 2008 installed. The issue on this server is, the SSMS is not showing all the Providers, particulary the Jet drivers, although they are shown in the server Registry.

I have re-installed the Office drivers from 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components but still theres no entry of these Jet drivers in the SSMS.

The attached pic is for reference that shows the issue.

Because of absence of these drivers, am not able to create a Linked Server for a excel. Please provide any help/inputs.

  • Could you check the registry key entry to see if the providers are listed?

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Providers

Also you could try to create a .UDL file to check whether you could see the provider.

How to create and configure UDL file refer to following article:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/e38h511e(v=vs.71).aspx

  • JET drivers are not supported on 64bit.

I know for SSIS, in order to create a connection to an EXCEL file, you have to run SSIS in 32bit mode. Never tried in SSMS...
