Hey guys,
I want to buy a physical server for being the main sql server and I want to create a virtual machine as a slow failover server.
Normally a backup server is licensed as long as there won't be any data select. So my question is: Is it also licensed as virtualized backup server?
The version would be SQL Server 2008 R2.
Thanks a lot.

You can always use the same licensing as for physical servers on virtual ones, so if you use a HA technology which does not require a license on the passive/secondary server, that applies whether the servers are physical or virtual.

Your best option here is setting up mirroring.
As long as you don't use database snapshots to query the mirror, you don't have to pay for the license.
This applies to physical and virtual servers.
