I work with Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
Recently, I needed to work with SQL Server Compact Edition 4 but owing to some reason, only CE 3.5 kept showing up in my VS2010 Data Sources window even though I uninstalled 3.5 and installed 4.0.
As I had been delaying re-installing VS2010 itself for several weeks now, I decided to brave it by doing both at the same time.
But knowing how unreliable uninstalling SQL Server can be, I opted to do a full clean manual uninstall, cleaning up the registry entries and also deleting specific folders in Program Files. However, not everything went smoothly, but I reckoned that if I wanted to do a clean install from scratch, the system better had no trace of any previous install.
For good measure, I also cleaned the registry of VS2010 traces and deleted their folders. Then, I set about my fresh install of VS2010 bundled with SQL Server 2008 Express 'development tools' (or something similar, I guess). At the end of it, I learned that two (minor) features (can't recall which) had failed to install but overall the whole exercise completed successfully and VS2010 now runs fine again.
Since I am not an SQL DBA by any stretch, I can only use SQL Server through a GUI front-end such as Management Studio. The sqlcmd utility has always failed me and I can never quite figure out what the other options such as Configuration Area Manager, etc are for. So, I set about installing Management Studio 2008.
At the prompt for selecting the edition, the options were disabled and 'Express with Advanced Services' was pre-selected, so I clicked Next and accepted the agreement terms. The next prompt was to install Setup Support Files which I clicked INSTALL. It failed with the following error message:
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: MsiGetProductInfo failed to retrieve ProductVersion for package with Product Code = ‘{4C9D82EB-9001-4E59-8F64-0BEE5F4A30A}’. Error code: 1605
Even though I opted for Check for a solution online, nothing happened and Installation Center just shut down.
This is precisely what I was afraid of. Since the only way I can work with SQL Server is through MS, I really need a solution to this problem.
Any help will be hugely appreciated.

Did you download management studio? Because it should be included with the installation media of your SQL Server 2008R2 edition.

No, Koen, I decided against the hassle of having multiple editions and/or instances and opted to settle for the default bundled installation of SQL Server 2008 Express. But I need MS to work with it. Unless there is a not-so-arcane alternative.

When I re-installed VS2010, SQL Server 2008 SP1 and some related tools failed to install properly.
When I re-installed SQL Server 2008 Management Studio, I get the same error as stated earlier.
When I checked the Registry section for installed instances, I found none; ditto under SQL Server Configuration Manager.
If anyone can help me resolve this, I shall be grateful.
