IO pressure with HV

  • New to using VMs for SQL. We have SQL 2012 SE. Our main apps are AX 2012 and SP. I'm seeing some IO pressure on both the log files and data files. I'm trying to figure out how to fix that. Of course way back in ancient times, you'd move some files to a new disk, add drives to get performance. But now with a VM who knows where the problem lies. No seriously, who knows? Is there value in creating new drives and moving files about? If not, can you point me in the right direction.

    1) YOU (and/or your SAN/VM admin) should "KNOW" EVERYTHING about your IO subsystem and what database files sit on what physical spindles and everything in between. Map it out, put it in an excel spreadsheet (I have seen that at a lot of clients who didn't want to pay money for software to do it for them) and then start evaluating individual LUN performance. Reconfigure/add as necessary until IO performance is acceptable.

    2) As part of mapping 1 above, also document ALL settings and configurations between the RAM inside the VM all the way down to physical storage media. Correct suboptimal settings/configs. Consider getting a good pro in to help you know what is bad and what to change to and why.

I will state unequivocally that all but a VERY small fraction of existing SQL Server workloads can be virtualized successfully. I will also state that there are a MYRIAD of ways that you can mess things up when doing so.
