Can't install SQL Server 2008 r2(see post for scenario)

  • OK,currently I'm working at the office on a workstation that's fixed their.

But the idea is that I should start working on the laptop computer provided to me, now their is a problem.

SQL Server 2008r2 refuses to install,I don't know the precise error atm but this is the following scenario done to this machine

    Windows 7 Ultimate

Installed SQL Server 2008 (October 2010)

    Upgraded to R2 (Jan-May 2011)

Installed SQL Server 2012 (September 2012)(parrallel)

    Deinstalled 2008r2 & 2012,due to leaving the company(March 2013)

    Returned to company(September 2013)

Tried to install 2008r2,did not work.

Is their anything I should have done besides following the uninstall

  • When you say the install 'did not work' what exactly do you mean? Were you trying to install it as the default instance or as a named instance? Which aspect failed exactly?

  • I tried both,default as named install.

At this moment I don't have a working install cd/dvd present, but from I remember is there were no errors in the install only that after the install was done SQL Server 2008 r2 was not installed

  • It's really hard to say without knowing what the error is. Maybe have a look and write it down for us?

  • Yeah,I was planning to do that but I'm getting the error

    The following error has occurred:

Unable to open Windows Installer file 'G:\x64\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\sql_engine_core_inst.msi'.

Windows Installer error message: The system cannot open the device or file specified.

Click 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.

But when I tried to install it in September 2013,I had a clean install,no errors, everything seemed A OK.

Only SQL Server 2008r2 was not showing up on desktop, start menu, program files folder or even in the list of installed programs

  • Did you follow the help link?

    Explanation

An attempt was made to install (or update) SQL Server Native Client on a computer where SQL Server Native Client is already installed, and where the existing installation was from an MSI file that was not named sqlncli.msi.

    User Action

To resolve this error, uninstall the existing version of SQL Server Native Client. To prevent this error, do not install SQL Server Native Client from an MSI file that is not named sqlncli.msi.

  • I did that, since last time I did try to install I did not get that error

But now after giving the product key

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

    File format is not valid..

So I looked this, checked the rft files and their empty
