FCI + AG Alwayson 2014

  • Hi Guys,

I need some one to clarify please. It very urgent.

We have Two stand alone SQL Server 2014 server (Production)

Lets assume names like SERVER A , SERVER B.

We want to have FCI + AG configured on it.

I am thinking, we need to first create the Windows Failover Cluster and we get name (example: WindowsclusterSQL)

Once, created , we need to Configure Quorum settings.

Then, we can Go to SERVER A and go to AlwaysonHighAvailability and go through the wizard setup.

    Thanks

  • Hi Guys,

The reason, why I am asking this question is , Especially FCI + AG (SQL SERVER 2014)

The SQL server instances are already present in production systems.

Can we still achieve FCI + AG on the current environment.

Server A has also replication configured to MYSQL server.

So, let me know if we have FCI + AG , can we still have the replication in Place ?

    Thanks

    Nkaka

  • Will you only have two servers in total?

  • You will need a minimum of 3 servers to achieve FCI+AG.

Server A and B will be the FCI. Only 1 can be run AO Replica 1 (Primary AO)

Server C AO replica 2 (Secondary AO)

All will need to be in a Windows Cluster not to be confused with a FCI cluster.

AO failover can only occur between A or B to C.

AO failover cannot be done between A and B as this is the FCI.

  • Hi, Thank you for responding.

But, Lets say I want to have ONLY two Servers, Server A and Server B already existing.

can I make them SQL clustered.

I know for a new installation example: Server C and Server D , We can make them SQL server Clustered. Since, they are going to be part of new sql cluster installation setup.

Can SQL cluster be configured on two standalone servers.(Example: between already existing Server A and Server B).

I think only windows failover cluster can be configured and then we can have AG built on it.

    Is my understanding correct.

    Hi Guys,

We want to have FCI + AG configured on it.

You cannot have FCI + AG on two nodes. This is a three node minimum setup.

The FCI will take up 2 nodes. Only one availability group can exist on the FCI.

  • That's what I was getting at with my question. (Also, even if you could do it, I can't think why you would.)

  • Thank you providing details.

    It is helpful for me.

  • Replying to this Question:

That's what I was getting at with my question. (Also, even if you could do it, I can't think why you would.)

The reason we want to do it, We have replication setup on Server A , to MYSQL Server C.

That's reason, in the even the Server A goes down, The distribution database will not move to another node if its just AG.

So, I am looking for FCI + AG

Let me know if this make sense.

    Thanks

AO failover can only occur between A or B to C.

also note that this failover cannot be automatic, it must be manual failover
