Install runs - nothing installed

  • We have two Windows 2003 servers with SQL Server enterprise, both with IIS enabled, they are intended to be duplicates of each other.  Same domain, same setup, same authentications, same accounts as service accounts, same LAN.

On the first we installed Reporting Services and it worked fine.

On the second -- same CD! -- we run the install, we are not prompted for which components to install, it takes off after the initial dialogs and installs only the Books On Line.  There are a bunch of directories created but nothing in the menus, no virtual directories, etc.

I tried to read the installation log, it's huge, thousands of lines, and no obvious error.  At the end it says "successful" installation.

We have tried it from various ID's, removing it first (it does appear in add/remove afterwards), installing from the console as well as terminal server sessions.  Nada.

We do not have visual studio on either of these machains, by intent, and that is the only warning it gives as it begins the install.  We have installed the required hotfix (859 I think, something like that).

It's almost like it decides up front it is incompatible, maybe like it thinks it is a workstation or something and only the BOL is legitimate.  Except it does create all those directories.

    Ideas?

  • We opened a call with Microsoft.  They say they have heard of this a few times before, and their answer so far has been to check a bunch of items (without result) and reinstall windows.

We have pressed back not to do the latter (This is a large W2003EE server and it's a big deal to get everything reconfigured).  The effort continues, but so far without result.

Frankly I am baffled -- MSI logs are incredibly detailed, it seems like they could just look at that and tell what is happening, but so far no luck.

  • Hi did you ever manage to find a solution for this? I've got it coming out of my ears!

  • We rebuilt the server from scratch and it finally worked.

Have I mentioned how much I like Windows lately?

  • Oh man
