SQL 2017 joining to a AG times out.

  • Hello,

I have 2 stand alone window server 2016 with sql 2017 CU14 installed named Node1 and node2.  When I try and add  the node 2 replica to this AG it times out with this error message below.  I have done a DNS lookup on both nodes and the ips and names resolve correctly.  I have both nodes with inbound firewall set up to allow AG in ports 5022 on both nodes.  I can ping both servers fine.  Both end points point to 5022.

I have another server node 3 with same installed software as node 1 and 2.  When i add node 3 to node 1 it syncs up fine and works.  The only difference between node 2 and 3 is node 2 is in Seattle and node 3 is in Atlanta.

Also, I am setting this up with no Windows Cluster.

A connection timeout has occurred while attempting to establish a connection to availability replica 'node2' with id []. Either a networking or firewall issue exists, or the endpoint address provided for the replica is not the database mirroring endpoint of the host server instance.

Please help this is driving me crazy and I'm running out of options.  Thanks.

  • Correction node 2 is in Atlanta and node 3 is in Seattle with node 1.

  • Found the solution.  It was tied to a network issue.  We moved our vms to another network and boom it connected and worked fine.

  • Thanks for posting back and I hope you have your sanity back now 🙂

    Sue
