HotFix 3175

  •     We're running SQL 2005 SP2, 32-bit in development and 64-bit in production. We've had some problems with Analysis Services going wild and using insane amounts of memory when users query our cubes in a certain way. I've discovered and installed hotfix 3175 which seems to have solved the problem in our 32-bit development environment. I'd like to apply the 64-bit version of the hotfix to our production environment but I'm a little concerned because Microsoft seems to indicate that we shouldn't apply the hotfix unless absolutely necessary ("This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.").  This doesn't give me too much confidence in the hotfix. I'd like to be able to back out the hotfix if it causes some other problems but I don't know how to do it... or if it is even possible. Does anyone know if it is possible to backout a hotfix? Also, does anyone know when SP3 for 32-bit and 64-bit will be released?

  • No idea on Sp3. They are releasing rollups post SP2 about every other month.

  • They just released rollup 3 (3186) I also have 3175 and had good luck but I am about to look at Rollup 3 instead.

  • Thanks Bob,

Do you know if there is any way to rollback a hotfix if there were problems with it?

  • I just discovered that I needed to check the Show Updates windows in Add Remove Programs in order to see HotFix 3175 and select it for removal. I was able to remove all components successfully except "SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components 2005". I get the error --> Unable to rollback MSP file  Exit Code Returned: 11038

  • Please let me know if you find a fix for this. I am running into the same error removing reporting services.

  • I didn't ever find out how to remove it but ended up installing on our production system and things have been fine so far...

  • We've been running build 3186 in production for a couple of months without any problems. Cumulative update 4, build 3200 is the latest build available (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941450/).
