MS Access database

    Hi Everyone,

    Would be a good idea to have Microsoft Access for storage and backend database for

    a logging and notification systems applications?

    Estimations the records can grow over 2 millions over couple months.

    Personally, I did not favor MS Access compare to Microsoft SQL Servers due to MS Access storage limitations.

    Can somone please provide me some advice and suggestion on MS Access limitations?

    Data size is going to render the access database unusable very quickly. How long do you need to store data in the database ? If more than a couple of month then surely SQL is the way forward. The Express editions are free !

    Hi Simon,

    Thanks for the links. Yes, I aware of the SQL Express edition is free.

    I need to convince the Analyst of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 over MS Access 2003 or 2007.

    The data will be residing in database for minimum 1 ++ years.

    We are going to biased on here by the very nature of the board ! But with the datasize you are looking at it shouldn`t be that hard to convince anyone that SQL is the way forward.

    Additional functionality, cost, support etc all win out for SQL.

    You will have performance issues if your database is going to grow by millions of records on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. access is not known for handling large databases that well and if you have a lot of users for this application, you could end up with a lot of problems.

    SQL Server will be the better option for reasons given by previous posts.
