SQL 32-bit and 64-bit?

  • We have an in-house application running on SQL 2000 Ent edition / Windows Server 2003 Ent edition. We need to upgrade SQL to SQL 2008 Enterprise but with the tight budget we don't know what route to do. The plan is to keep the existing 32-bit hardware / 32-bit Window server 2003 Ent and purchase license for 64-bit SQL 2008 Enterprise but we will downgrade to 32-bit SQL 2008 Enterprise when we do the upgrade. That way we don't need to purchase an upgrade again from 32-bit to 64-bit when we have the budget to buy 64-bit hw. Is it possible to do this way or we cannot downgrade from 64-bit to 32-bit SQL?

    Thx.

  • I'll give the same advice I always give on this kind of question: Ask Microsoft. They have people who can give an official answer, in writing, which is legally defensible. Any answer given on this forum will be some person's opinion, and if it's wrong, you'll just be SOL if you follow it.

  • already done that, still waiting for email from MS. I thought someone here had been through this.

    Thx.

  • 32 bit and 64 bit are not considered different editions from a licensing perspective. If you buy a licence for SQL 2008 Enterprise edition, you have a licence for SQL 2008 Enterprise edition. Whether you install x86, x64 or IA64 is irrelevant.

  • AFAIK, Gail is correct. You do not downgrade from 64 bit to 32 bit. You license the edition. The platform you choose is up to you. 64 bit does not cost more than 32 bit from a licensing perspective.

  • I just talked to a reseller and she confirmed I can install on either 32 or 64 bit hw.

    Thx.
