I was just wondering if everyone keeps up with the latest patches that Microsoft puts out there? I've just been keeping up with the service packs, but now I'm starting to wonder if I should keep up with the patches. Is there a good place to view what the lastest service pack and set of patches are? This question is for 7.0 and 2000... Also - Is there any type of notification to JUST get SQL Server related topics that could alert me of new patches?
The other road block that I run into is the fact that these new patches go on top of the latest service pack. There are vendor databases that are not yet "certified" with the latest SQL Server Service Pack and therefore we are stuck behind a service pack on some servers... It now turns into an adminitrative nightmare...
Anyway, just wondering what other DBA's are doing and to see if I'm not alone on this topic...

I generally only worry with the patches if they apply to me directly. You have to be carefull thought with patches outside the SP method as they have a shorter path to prod cycle and are not tested as well as SPs. These have in many cases been the cause of revisioning problems of files. Not sure about the best place, I usually hit http://www.microsoft.com/sql once a week and I know of no mailing list ran by Microsoft. I know the issues you run into and have dealt with it for a long time now.

Thanks for the reply. I just always feel like I'm missing something... and when I saw the patch come out this past April 17th, I started thinking, is this one of those things that I'm missing. I DONT want to apply the patch unless it really applies, but I wasn't sure if this was the best approach. Thanks again for the reply, this helps in making "blanket" desisions.
