SQL2K Co-exist With SQL7.0

  • I have a box with SQL 7.0. I am planning to load a named instance of SQL 2000 on the same box. Will this cause any problems? Any specific precautions I should take during the install? Thank you for your help!

  • I have one development box running the same. No issues. Infact I have installed this last week. I have installed 7.0 as default to D:\MSSQL7\, then SQL Server 2000 Names Instance to D:\MSSQL2000\MSSQL\. NO Issues so far.

Does any one have any issues?

    .

  • Been running this config in Dev for ages, no issue's at the server.

Do note that older MDACs pre 2.6 (???) cannot easily reference a Named instance. That was the only problem we found.

  • Thank you, guys, for the helpful input.

With regard to the MDAC issue, it may make things complicated. My test server is on a cluster. According to Microsoft: 'MDAC 2.6 or Later Should Not Be Installed on SQL Server 7.0 Clusters'.

If pre 2.6 MDACs have problem talking to a named instance, what would be a good workaround, if there is any?
