Can I name a SQL Server (2000) something other than the machine name? I've read most of the articles out there and they all seem specific to the machine name changing. We do not want to use named instances i.e. machine_name\instance_name.
We manage many different RDBMS's and the Windows machine names do not correspond with our naming convention for data servers.
Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.
