Hi All,
I always have this question on my mind. Need your help on this.
If I need to shutdown SQL servers, is it sufficient enough to just ensure NO connection via Current Activity pane in EM (Enterprise Manager)? Should I stop manually the SQL services before I shutdown the SQL servers? Appreciate if you could give me your reason.
Also I feel very delighted if you could share with me your check list or "What TO DO List" when there's a need to shutdown the SQL servers.
Thanks

Just stop your SQL server service. thats enough. SQL server service closes all connections and then stops so there is no need for you to manually close all existing connections. But make sure that there is no active transaction involved in it.

there are serveral ways to shutdown sqlserver:
- service manager
- TSQL : Shutdown
- net stop sqlserver
- EM rightclick servername / stop
They all shutdown sqlserver.
If there are open transactions going on (They are logged into the db-logs), they will be rolled back during the next startup.
The rollforward event / rollback event is mentioned in the sqlserver errorlog file.

I wrote up a bunch of notes about managing the service while back - here is a link to the first one: http://qa.sqlservercentral.com/columnists/awarren/startingandstoppingsqlserverpart1.asp
