Data Synchronizing with flat files

  • We are in the process of migrating away from an old VMS system that using flat files to store it's data to MSsql.  I have no problem getting the data to the server one time, but for the next 1-2 years we need to keep the data in sync while we make the conversion.  Does anyone have any experience or ideas on how to keep the data consistant?  What are standard practices when it comes to the same record being updated on both systems before the merge?

  • I also work at a company that is slowly migrating away from an RMS db on OpenVMS.  I'm guessing this is the database that you are speaking about as well.  There are a few programs on the market that give you the option of using an odbc connection to an RMS data source.  The one we chose was Connx32.  More info be found at http://www.connx.com/.  We use it only for an odbc connection, but they also make another product which does an incremental data synch.  We found this product to be a bit more than what we wanted to pay (we're a very small business with tight purse strings) but it seemed to be right where you need to be.

I don't really like to plug 3rd party stuff, but these guys have a decent product their support team has been great every time I've dealt with them.
