Problem in modifying DNS alias on SQL 2000 cluster

  • Hi,

we're moving our sql2000 db server to a new server. The source server has SQL2000 active/active cluster configured with 3 named instances running. we shutdown ClusterB and move all the groups to cluster A. Now, after I restored the dbs to the new server, we modified the alias on the DNS server (changed the IP address) to redirect to the new server. We're thinking that by doing this, we don't have to change the odbc connections of every remote clients out there. All remote clients are configured to point to the DNS alias instance name. however, this method doesn't work as the DNS entry kept reverting back to the old server IP address. Anyone had any experience on this or any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

  • Did you get the change made in the master DNS server or a slave?

If your DNS environment is integrated with AD (which is normal) then the change needs to be made on the domain controller that is the primary reference for your leg of the DNS tree. If no delegation of authority is done in your AD setup, then the primary reference is always the master domain controller.
