I have the dubious honor of creating policy and best practices for our SQL Servers. I saw Microsofts best practice and I am not real happy with it. Does anyone know of a doc that I can use to get started?

That's quite a topic. Usually most companies will have some sort of docucment style for technical tdocs. Start there.
Then work one section at a time. Perhaps, "installation of SQL Server" would be a good place.
Sorry, don't have a doc handy, but I'll look when I get back to the office for somethign Ican post.
