Log Shipping - Licences

  • This is a follow up to a post I made a couple of weeks ago about licencing SQL Server.

If I were to log ship would both the 'production' server and the 'standby' server need to have Enterprise licences?  Having to Buy an Enterprise licence for a machine that will not do anything except restore log files 'just in case' seems a little harsh.

My plan is to have a SQL Cluster at head office which ships logs to regional offices at set intervals.  Would I be right in thinking I need the following SQL Licences?

1 x SQL Enterprise Licence for an Active / Passive cluster

    or

2 x SQL Enterprise Licences for an Active / Active cluster.

1 x SQL Enterprise Licences for each of the servers I want to ship the logs to?

  • According to MS, both the 'production' server and the 'standby' server have to be licensed identically if Enterprise Edition log shipping is used.

To get around that, you could roll your own log shipping using the method described in this article: http://www.sql-server-performance.com/sql_server_log_shipping.asp

It refers to SQL Server 7.0 but it works the same in 2000.
