Samples Needed!

  • Guys help me out... I need some MS Access Database samples and/or any database design samples from which I can build a database. Please give any links you might know.

    Thanks

  • Actually I think you'd be better off buying a book that shows you just that... Maybe someone knows a good ms access book that has some normalized designs??

  • well, you should have gotten some samples with Access - make sure you do a full install to get them loaded.  Also Microsoft has some you can download.  But if you've never designed a database at all, you might be smart to get some professional help right at the start, because correcting design errors gets dramatically more expensive the farther along you get in the project.

  • The Northwind database should come with all versions of Access as well as sql server - although it might not install by default.

If you don’t have a nwind.mdb or northwind.mdb on your c drive, you should be able to add it via control panel -> add/remove programs. it will allow you to change the installed options and you want to install samples. You can look at the database diagram, etc and it should be very helpful.

a good and simple book dedicated to database design is 'Database Design for Mere Mortals' (http://www.bookpool.com/sm/0201752840).

There are lots of other good Access books available - from 97 to 2003. Do a search and read the reviews. MS Press usually has some good beginning titles (Step by Step).

A good Access site is http://mvps.org/access/ although I would say it wasn’t dedicated to design.

Poke around Northwind and use the built in help file in Access- it is realy pretty good.

Just something to consider, SQL Server is not that much harder than learning Access, although some Access experience helps. MS Press 'Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation' should be a good resource - includes some db design and the SQL Server client tools (I read the SQL Server 7 version so many times when I was starting out, it fell apart - poor binding didn’t help).

  • Here's another link for access forums :

  • Some models for you too:

  • Pretty bad if you cannot even figure out what you want to build a database to do.  If you want design help that is one thing, but you really need to learn to think for yourself and at least have a starting point.  For example, "Hey guy, I want to build a database to keep track of customers and our contact with them.  I need some help with the design since I have not done this before."
