How powerful should be a developer''s workstation?

  • How powerful should be a workstation to ensure a good productivity for the SQL 2005 and VS 2005 developer?

Do you have any experience with the acoustical noise level of such workstations?

    Thank you very much,

    Dinu A

  • IMHO acoustical noise level 'issues' in todays technology are not acceptable for a workstation.

  • Many thanks Rudy, I'm glad to hear that.  I just rejected a Xeon x64 double processor that was making a noise louder than a vacuum cleaner.  The manufacturer insists that it is state-of-the-art.

My first question could be translated to: is Xeon x64 double processor overkill or not (for the next 3-4 years)?

    Thanks again,

    Dinu

  • I would say that as far as the power of the workstation it really depends on what you want to do.

Personally, I would be more concerned with RAM than processor speed as VS 2005 seems to hog memory.

I have 1Gb RAM in a 2.2GHz AMD PC and this produces (barely) acceptable performance. A 3.2GHz PC with 512MB struggles.

If possible I would recommend at least 2GB of suitably fast RAM plus a fast hard disk.

I can't comment on machine noise because I am deaf
