Waht''s the step to apply SP4 and hotfix at cluster environment

  • I have a SQL 2000 with SP3 at cluster 2 notes environment.  I would like to apply SP4 and Hotfix (KB899761).  But, I am not sure how the steps.

    (1) apply SP4 at first note (Which the note is active)

    (2) Fail over SQL to 2nd note and apply SP4 at 2nd, again.

    (3) Apply Hotfix at 2nd note and fail over SQL server to 1st note to apply hotfix?

    Is someone can help ?

    Thanks,

    KT

  • The documentation states:

    1. Run the service pack from the node that owns the group containing the virtual server that you plan to upgrade. This installs the service pack files on all nodes in the failover cluster.
    2. In the Setup dialog box, type the name of the virtual server that you plan to upgrade.
    3. Keep all nodes of the cluster online during setup. This ensures that the upgrade is applied to each node of the cluster.

Presumably you would install the hotfix on each individual node since that is the traditional method.  But I am not sure and want to know myself.  A CAUTIONARY NOTE: SP3a documentation for installing on a cluster was wrong and updated in KB816502 where it detailed the installation process the same way as you described it above.

Have MS changed the way the SP's and HotFixes are applied or is their documentation wrong?  They have already updated it once see KB884525, presumably they would have corrected it there if the process had changed from the method documented in the original readme file.

Has anyone installed SP4 with the HotFix KB899761 on a a windows 2003 server with 8GB of ram or more? What process did you follow, did you have any problems?

  • Do I need to apply SP4 for both note or apply one note only?

  • HI, Just let you know that SP4 and Hotfix (KB899761) both are cluster share software. Do need to make sure all SQL resource on line.  By the way, Hotfix KB899761 can be apply by all inatance at one time.
