SQL SERVER 2000 Licensing

    Hello,

    We planning migration of 2 SQL 2000 Instances (clustered) to run as standalones on a single server(multiple instance )

    In the current production setup the licensing Modes are as follows:

    Server 1 : Per seat for 5 devices

    Server 2 : Per seat for 8 devices

    I am just beginning the SQL Installs for the Destination Server that will house the 2 instances in the future.Any idea what option I should pick for my licensing?

    FYI...The server we re migrating to (which will hold 2 instances) will be used as production once we shutdown server1,2.

    Wouldn't you pick the ame options as before? Has something changed with the users?

    Instance 1 per Per seat for 5 devices

    Instance 2 per Per seat for 8 devices

    If you don't have 13 users anymore you could alter these numbers to match the number of CALs installed. This is documentation for you so you know the number of users CALS

    You would really need to check with Microsoft. Depending on the edition you are installing, it is possible that you could actually combine the CALS and have 13 users/devices capable of connecting to either instance.

    I have worked with SQL Server 2000 in quite awhile so I am not sure of its licensing requirements anymore.

    I am pretty sure this is just documentation. It is nice to know how may CALS there are so so can make sure your licencing is correctly paid for. But if the server says per seat for 6 users and 100 workstations attach then from a technical standpoint everything continues to work. You won't ever see a warning. It is up to your company to track the CALS. Our organization does this by buying a SQL CAL for every workstation on our network regardless of whether it needs it or not. This has worked out fine (until SQL 2012, which is different)

    Thanks Guys! Thats what I will do...

    I am wondering about the cost now....Will I be paying extra for these (5,8) CALs even though the old Servers would be shut down?

    The old servers will be shut down a short while after the new server(where we re migrating to) gets active...

    You shouldn't have to pay anything since you are retiring the old servers. All you are doing is moving the licensed software to new hardware.
