Talk to your credit-card processor. I believe that they have some numbers that can be used for this type of thing - they pass the verification process but are completely fake and do nothing.Of course, this would mean that all records would have the same value for this column.
Having dealt with a few CC Processors, each one has provided test Card numbers that would pass validation. You should check with your processor and confirm as Wayne said.
Thanks Wayne and Cirque, will do so. The trick is I need 3+ million unique ID's but hope they have that many. I also found the algorithm and some TSQL do add a check digit to a 15 digit card number, making it a "valid" 16 digit number. I'm talking to the QA folks to see if there's a way for me to test if they pass.
Gaby, since this is in a test environment, wouldn't it be okay to have them be the same? If it's to test the process, does it matter if everyone has the same card?
Unfortunately not...it's a lookup table storing prior CC numbers for faster order processing in the future. The way it works is:
1. Order comes in
2. CC is encrypted
3. If Encrypted value matches encrypted value in lookup table, it is a prior existing card, else insert the card for future lookups.
Each order has a credit card ID that is the key that corresponds to the credit card and only the CC ID is stored for an order, not the CC.
This way, we don't have to compare unencrypted values at all.

What kind of encryption are you using? Most of the usual encryption algorithms are nondeterministic, so encrypting the same value twice gives different outputs.

Hi Gail,
It's AES-256, CBC mode, with an IV. It's all done by an external appliance that holds the keys.
All inserts/updates to the encrypted column make a call via .dll to the device and encrypted value returned. All control/encryption/decryption is handled at the device. It actually works pretty well.

The South Island resorts have good skiing most of the year 🙂
Mount Ruapehu, on the North Island, is good from June to October - though it is an active volcano (last eruption 2007).

My sense of adventure is tempered by the desire to enjoy my life in places other than airplanes.
Plus I'm not sure it's worth it to me. I've skiied in Switzerland. Better than CO, but not better enough to make me want to go back.
