Instance Failure

  • Guys,

Firstly, I'm fairly new to SQL i.e. it's a minimal part of my current role.

I recently had the following question put to me - "If a SQL instance ceased working, how would you determine the cause and how would you know which team to approach first (e.g. Development, App Support ect)?

I have read a little on Dedicated Administrator Connection but would like further reading on diagnosing issue and who to approach for a solution??

  • Welcome to the wonderful world of troubleshooting.

"ceased working" is too broad of an expression...

... I'll find out if the host is alive

... I'll find out if the offending instance is alive

... I'll find out if "ceased working" for all apps or for a specific one

... I'll find out if there is connectivity to the host, instance.

SQL Server and O/S logs will come handy - depending on findings you can carry on.
