This thread has become a laundry list of worst practices!! 🙂

That by itself presents an opportunity, care to do a write up?

    😎

Nope, sorry. I don't like to create material. I don't blog or write books or articles or maintain a website for my consulting business. Hell, I don't even keep my resume up to date! 😀 Even the almost 300 sessions I have presented at SQL Saturday events have mostly been material that others graciously let me borrow.

Guess we have to toss this hot potato in someone else's lap then:-D

only a few of IT personnel will have authorize to access it. Access to server recently is to make changes on McAfee and check some of the message in Event Viewer.

You do realize that with the correct permissions, no one needs to RDP into a server to connect to Event Viewer, right?

I can add any server's Event Viewer to my own desktop, so long as I have the rights. Prevents the need for RDP into the server.

Well, if your network is wide open to the named pipes traffic and has those ports open - sure you can do that.

I have several clients that have disallowed the ports specific to the event log (sure they are used for other RPC type features as well) along with disabling of named pipes across certain routed zones.

If they lock down the ports or even named pipes traffic - then you have to rdp to see the event logs.
