What kind of alerts do you use?

  • I am wondering what kind of alerts do you find useful for SQL Server in your production environment?

We are thinking of using some but the only thing that comes to mind as useful is an alert for when the processors are near 100% usage.

For those of you who use alerts do you use SQL Server event alerts or SQL Server performance condition alerts or both?

For those of you who don't use alerts, why not?

  • I use several, mostly when job stuff fail. Also, server conditions exist that are not healthy. A number of replication alerts, log file full, Insufficient Resources (which has never occurred so far). The fatal error stuff is turned on and rare I have seen any of true issue. Occasionally I will create alerts or use others that exist to catch specific problems with they occurr like syntax error in sql.

  • Don't really use alerts here. I have messed iwth them in the past, but haven't seen the need. I have a number of checks in place with either jobs or external machines to watch the servers.
